Jermaine Dupri has just released a statement confirming his departure
as President of Virgin Records’ Urban Music branch.
Rumors stated last week that JD threatened to quit due to lackluster sales
of Janet Jackson‘s 20 Y.O. album. Though the album debuted
in the Top 5 three weeks ago, sales of 20 Y.O. have fallen short in comparison
to previous Jackson albums. The album has sold 416, 353 units to date, according
to Nielsen SoundScan.
"Since there are so many rumors running rampant about my position at Virgin
Records, I feel that it is necessary to set the record straight," JD via
a statement. "I was not forced out of the company, I made a decision that
it was in my best interest to leave."
In addition to his Virgin duties, JD’s So So Def imprint is distributed by
the company. His roster includes Da Brat, Dem Franchize Boyz and Daz Dillinger,
among others. Daz recently dropped his So So Gangsta album, only selling 51,
308 copies since its release on September 23rd. There’s still no word on whether
So So Def will still be distributed by Virgin Records.
