The Grammy-winning rapper announced on Twitter that he was considering taking the role for the live-action adaptation of the futuristic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, which has been in development for years and had Robert Rodriguez attached to direct at one point. "I was just discussing becoming the creative director for the Jetson movie," he wrote. Producer Denise Di Novi confirmed to MTV News that talks had taken place, after Kanye contacted producers and expressed his interest in working on the project.
"We heard that he knew we were working on The Jetsons. He reached out and said he's a huge Jetsons fan," she recalled. "There are a lot of Jetsons fanatics out there, especially people that are into either futuristic science or design. He was interested in creatively brainstorming what we were doing with the movie and what ideas he might have. It was a really friendly, preliminary conversation." She added: "He was going to think about it more and see if he got inspired visually.
He's a very visual artist." The space-age cartoon, which aired from 1962 to 1987, stars George Jetson, his wife Jane, his son Elroy, daughter Judy, plus their robot maid Rosie and dog Astro. It was turned into an animated film in 1990, Jetsons: The Movie, with many of the original voices such as George O'Hanlon as George, Patric Zimmerman as Elroy and Penny Singleton as Jane.
