The Grammy Awards are coming around again soon and the announcements made yesterday of the nominees is making big news, particularly when it comes to a certain Lil guy. Lil Wayne has had a scorcher of a year. Top selling album, plenty of controversy, and he even welcomed a new life into the world with the birth of his son last month. Now his year is being topped off as Wayne leads the list with a total of 8 nominations, including the most coveted album of the year award. He is the only hip hop artist up for the top award  as he is going against Ne-Yo, Coldplay, Radiohead, Robert Plant and Allison Krause for the album of the year.

Other notable nominees are Jay-Z and Kanye West who both received 6 nominations, along with T.I. and Lupe Fiasco who are hopeful winners for 4 awards.  Neil Portnow, president of The Recording Academy says that the heavily hip hop laden nominations reflect where music is at now as a culture.  “The Grammy Awards process once again has yielded a comprehensive, diverse and eclectic group of excellent nominees across multiple genres,” Portnow stated.  “This year’s nominations are truly reflective of the talented community of artists and creators who represent some of the highest levels of musical excellence. Coupled with our first-ever primetime nominations special, featuring stellar performances by past Grammy winners and nominees, we’re off to an incredible start on the road to Music’s Biggest Night and the 51st Annual Grammy Awards in February.”

Miami’s own Flo Rida is also nominated for 2 Grammy awards including Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Low” and Best Rap Song for “Low.”

The winner for these awards will be chosen by over 12,000 members of The Recording Academy, and will be announced during the live telecast of the Grammy’s airing on CBS February 8.
