After proclaiming himself the “best rapper alive,” Lil Wayne is now singing a new tune, literally. Lil Wayne will grace the cover of the April 16, 2009 issue of Rolling Stone stating in his interview that he has officially gone rock with his rock debut entitled “Rebirth” hitting the stores in June. Now in the past, some rappers have dabbled into rock music, fusing the melodic riffs in rock and roll to the beautiful swag in Hip-Hop creating some of the hottest songs, including the Pioneers of Hip-Hop Run DMC with “Walk This Way” featuring Aerosmith. Lil Wayne has taken it a step further, by having an entire rock album. Other artists have gone rock before, but have never received this much media attention for it, including rapper Ice T, who founded the heavy metal band Body Count.

According to MTV News, in the magazine profile he states this: “”Honestly? I don’t want to be the best rapper in the world,” Wayne told Rolling Stone in an upcoming cover story arriving on newsstands Friday. “If I have a rap album I’m dropping, then I want it to be the best rap album. But I want to be the best. Period. Now. My favorite rapper hasn’t done what I’m doing.”

Wayne discusses his entire transition from rap to rock. He took it as far as even discussing waking up in a bed with multiple women and having no ideas of who they were.

“The rock sh– just comes from what my life is now. I’ve grown into this person,” Wayne told the magazine. “I woke up one morning and had three or four women in my bed where I not only didn’t know their last names, I didn’t know the beginning letter of their first names. All I know is, they’re the most beautiful women in the world, and I was in my own place, in whatever city I as in. And I could have thrown a dart at the map, and I’d probably have a place there too. I knew my driver was waiting downstairs for me. When my nose finally cleared from all the weed I had smoked, I smelled food in the kitchen and I knew it was my chef. Then I look on my phone and see a message and know it’s from a popular woman everyone knows. And when I went in the studio that night, I couldn’t just rap, ‘Yeah, n—a … .’ “

So I’m guessing he feels that if you live the rock lifestyle, you might as well sing the rock music? That’s a very interesting concept, I must admit but artists have done crazier things before.  Will Weezy ever return to rap? Who knows, but according to Rolling Stone, Wayne tells them that “It became such a regularity for me that I got tired of it.” Tired of rapping? Oh no, not Wayne, not the “best rapper alive.” I wonder if this is an epiphany or a mere publicity stunt to boost his career. Not that he needs the boost, but what could’ve happened all of a sudden?

Regardless of the reason, two of Lil Wayne’s rock tracks have already surfaced including his single “Prom Queen” and a song online called “Hot Revolver.”  I’ve heard both tracks and surprisingly, I actually enjoyed them. Not a big fan, but I will say I’m glad that he is trying to be creative and doing something different from his normal hits. After awhile, things just become repetitive and you get tired of listening.

His single “Prom Queen” has yet to take off on the Billboard charts but I’m sure he will gain some followers sooner or later. Both songs aren’t traditional rock tracks as he ventures into a new sound adding Auto-Tune to his unique voice; still maintaining that Hip-Hop flavor and a new emo vibe. Most likely not something for all rock fans, but I definitely see followers in the near future.

Also in the magazine Lil Wayne goes on to say: “You look at yourself and say, ‘You ain’t the best,’ ” he explained. ” ‘Show me you’re the best. Show me you can play the f—ing guitar without lessons. Show me you can make a hit song and make everybody tell you, “I love what you’re doing.” Show me you can do that.’ And then I come out that door and jump back in my body. I do that every night.”

Well regardless of how you feel about him, you definitely can’t argue with that.  To read more about Lil Wayne “Gone Rock,” check out the latest issue of Rolling Stones or MTV News.com.
