Music for movies has been somewhat of a huge formality amongst Hollywood for quite some time now. At times, the music may or may not be inspired by the movie or maybe it just fits quite well. The Transformers series has become huge not only at the box office, but also with the soundtrack provided for the movie, as a matter of fact two separate soundtracks were released for the last two films, one being the ‘songs inspired by the motion picture and the other being only orchestration. The director of the franchise, Michael Bay, must be a huge fan of Linkin Park, because for the past two films LP has scored the theme song for each film. Now with the third installment making its way into theaters, the band was requested by Bay for yet another theme song.

So you could say that Linkin Park is three for three with the Transformers franchise. And the chosen track to headline the movie soundtrack will be a remixed version of the song ‘Iridescent,’ a track that is featured on their recent album ‘A Thousand Suns.’ Lead emcee, producer, and occasional rhythm guitarist and keyboardist, Mike Shinoda recently spoke with MTV News about their experience with scoring the soundtrack, the actual choosing of the song, and why they thought ‘Iridescent’ was the better choice.

These were his comments:

“The ‘Transformers’ collaboration has been really fun for us. I mean, we grew up playing with the toys. When we first got approached on the first one, we said yes based on the idea of taking that thing that we loved so much and bringing it to life in a modern way. As it’s gone on, that’s still a big part of it for us.”

When first Transformers launched into theaters, Linkin Park headed the theme song with ‘What I’ve Done,’ which was also the lead single from the album ‘Minutes to Midnight.’ LP then followed up on the sequel when Bay approached them for an original song. The band went into the lab, wrote and recorded the track ‘New Divide,’ which in turn became the lead theme song and original work recorded solely for the movie and its accompanying soundtrack.

People have always said that third time’s a charm, so with that when Bay approached the band for a third follow up, Shinoda already had in mind which song he thought to fit:

“We put out the record in the late part of last year and even though it’s never been a single up until this point, [when we played it live] you could really hear the singing pick up momentum during that song. It was just something that seemed a natural fit.”

If they haven’t released the song as a single yet, they will now. Shinoda admits that the song doesn’t actually follow well with battling intergalactic robots; however, both Bay and the band agree it works quite well on both ends:

“We loved that part of it when we were in the studio, but Michael actually loved pairing it with the movie because there’s something that he feels it speaks to about the story line.”

At press time, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is set to be officially released on July 1, 2011 in 3D.
