Martin Lawrence is heading back to TV after landing a talent deal with a major network.
CBS has given its green light to a comedy pilot starring the comedic actor. Lawrence will play the role of a widowed father of two teenagers who, after losing his job in construction, decides to go to the police academy and become a cop at the age of 46.
Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger are writers for the project and they are both executive producing along with Lawrence’s managers, Michael Green and Sam Maydew.
CBS had originally hired the two top writers, Tom Hertz and Larry Wilmore, to pen the original scripts, but in the end the writing job went to Lisbe and Reger for their ability to create great cop comedy.
Martin is best know for his hit TV show Martin. The show ran for 5 seasons without incident, until Tisha Cambell, who played Martin’s girlfriend on the show, claimed sexual harrassment on Martin and left the show. Cambell later returned when the case was settled out of court.
