We had the chance to sit down with up and coming rapper, EstaBoN. Hailing from Detroit, and eventually landing in Chi-town, his life struggles clearly have influenced his versatile style and lyrics. Check out what this ‘New Artist’ has in store for his audiences and take a look into what he’s all about. Be sure to check out his featured MP3 and Video!
1. How did you come up with your rap name? Tell us about it.
My rap name is actually my nickname and I’ve had it since I was 14. Growing up I had a lot of Mexican friends and “business” partners haha. So the name just kind of stuck I guess.
2. Where are you from, and what was it like growing up there?
I’m from Detroit. I was born on the East side and raised on the West side. When I was in Detroit everyone around me was poverty stricken and there was a lot of violence. I can’t really go into full detail, but you get the idea. Then I moved to Chicago and stayed with my aunt. In the suburbs of Chicago it was a lot better, but the city of Chicago was relatively the same.
3. Who were you raised by? Tell us your family situation. Got any brothers, sisters, or any siblings? Tell us about your childhood, and how it impacted your music?
I have 4 sisters and 1 brother, and my aunt who is my mother’s sister raised me. Being in an abusive household in Detroit, being in a drug infested community, and losing loved ones to those things has influenced the type of music I make. The different struggles I’ve been through and the things I have seen have influenced my music career. Moving to the suburbs of Chicago brought a contrast to the darker topics I rap about as well.
4. What age did you start rapping?
I began rapping at the age of 11. This is when I started to take music seriously, specifically rap. I heard the Blueprint album by Jay-Z around that time, which definitely pushed me towards rapping as opposed to pursuing another genre of music.
5. What inspired you to pursue making music?
I am from a family where a lot of us are musically gifted. However, a lot of other people in my family tried to discourage music as a way of life. Most people in my family were OK with conforming to what everybody else was doing. My Grandfather was the one who instilled the idea in me that I could choose music as a career. He wanted me to be a beacon of light for my family. In addition, my childhood counselor taught me how to use music as an outlet to relieve all my stress.
6. What made you pursue music as a way to make money?
My uncle always taught me to do what I LOVE to do as a career, so here I am. Fuck a 9-5!
7. What artists do you work with? Or rubbed shoulders with?
I’ve worked with a lot of underground artists, but no mainstream artists yet. For example, Jesse Farrar, who is an extremely talented vocalist, featured on my debut Mixtape “Perfect Timing”.
8. What else you got coming out? New Album? or Mixtape?
I’m actually working on an EP as well as my next mixtape as we speak. I’m working with some new and very talented people that I have never worked with before, so keep your eyes and ears open.
9. Tell us about your newest single “Perfect Timing”. How did you come up with that, share the story?
My 2nd single called “Perfect Timing” is the title track of my mixtape. I came up with the concept by analyzing my life and seeing where I was at personally, as well as seeing all the moves my team and I have made. It’s all perfect timing when it comes to the different steps it took to get to where I’m at now and setting up a foundation for me to get to the next level. All by the grace of God I’m here today.
10. Any new travel plans? What else you got going on?
Right now we’re just working on tour dates to get my debut Mixtape “Perfect Timing” heard globally. I’m opening for Bone Thugz ‘N Harmony in Milwaukee on July 26th which is a huge step for me. I’m also performing at Sound Invasion on August 22nd, which is a showcase put on by Columbia College at a venue called Bottom Lounge in Chicago. In addition, I will be performing at The Store in Lincoln Park on August 3rd. No time to travel when you’re grinding to get your name recognized.
11. What is the biggest thing to happen in your career?
The biggest thing to happen in my career thus far is meeting Anthony Saleh, who manages Nas and a number of other acts. We were able to link up in NYC with my manager and the rest of the Life In Motion team to discuss the next steps my team and I should be taking to get to the next level. He was able to give us extremely valuable insight, and we can’t thank him enough. Best part is we all ended up talking about the rap game, past a present, as if we had known each other for years. Thanks again Anthony!
