Sony BMG is reportedly terminating their urban music division
and a large number of the unit’s current employees are expected to be laid off.
According to label insiders and industry experts who spoke to the New York Post,
the announcement of Sony Urban’s dissolution will be made on December 1.
The Post’s sources also revealed that not all of Sony Urban’s employees will
be laid off; some are slated to be reassigned to other units within the label.
Office departments dealing with business and legal affairs are expected to be
affected the most by the label’s dismantling.
Sony Urban’s current artists, which include John Legend, DMX, Beyoncé
and Three 6 Mafia, will be reassigned to Epic and Columbia, Sony BMG’s
two main labels.
