PlayStation gamers might have to find something else to do this Easter weekend.
Sony Corp. is still working to get its PlayStation Network service up and running following an extended disruption that has been affecting the company over the past couple of days. The service connects millions of the company’s videogame console customers over the Internet in order to chat and play videogames together.
Sony said it is investigating the cause of the outage and it may take some time before its able to fully restore the service. “Thank you very much for your patience while we work to resolve this matter,” Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold said in a blog post Thursday. On Friday, the company said the service was still unavailable.
While Sony hasn’t said what caused the disruption, it does come following threats from a vigilante group known as “Anonymous,” which said it would attack Sony’s Internet services following a lawsuit against a well-known hacker, George Hotz. Sony said it settled with Hotz on March 31.
The service disruptions also come at the same time that Amazon.com Inc. had technical problems at one of its data centers, causing several of its customers’s websites and Internet services to crash or have limited availability.
Sony’s technical troubles follow the release of a highly anticipated game by privately-held Valve Corp. , “Portal 2,” which was publicized with ads running in blogs, news sites and even a billboard in downtown San Francisco.
