New York, NY – Quite possibly the second most watched music awards show was aired last night to millions across the world as MTV put together an amazing show for the 2009. It was quite respectful as veteran pop artist Madonna opened the event with a beautiful, yet tearful, monologue about the late great Michael Jackson. She added personal attributes as she narrated a story about how she Michael throughout her whole life. Her words echoed throughout the auditorium as she stated that ‘Yes, yes Michael Jackson was a human being, but dammit, he was a king. Long live the king,’ concluding with a standing ovation from the entire audience.
The show then immediately segwayed into a medley of Michael’s hit songs and video with a collection of dancers portraying his infamous dance steps that he showcased all on his own. Music videos from ‘Thriller’ to ‘Smooth Criminal’ echoed through the auditorium with a huge reception from the crowd. As the ‘Scream’ video appeared on the screen, Janet Jackson appeared on stage following along the same dancesteps as the video providing an amazing montage.
After a quick set from Katy Perry, the eccentric host of the show Russell Brand appeared on stage stating to the crowd that this event was dedicated entirely to Michael Jackson before going into a corny set of comedic anecdotes showcasing his annoying voice. He mentions that Jay-Z and Beyonce is the hottest couple and that they were in the building. Brand even went into discussing the topic of Lady Gaga about her being a hermaphrodite.
The most interesting part about the show that will definitely be talked about for the next couple of months was when they presented the award for ‘Best Female Video’ to Taylor Swift. During her acceptance speech, the wild and unpredictable Kanye West appeared on stage embarrassing Swift by grabbing mic out of her hand and telling the crowd that ‘I’m sorry, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time,’ looking over at a stunned Beyonce. Kanye is usually a fan and a booster of his own work, but last night was the first time he ranted about someone else’s. West has always been known for his infamous diva rants, so it wasn’t as shocking, as more or less disrespectful. Later on during the show, Beyonce apologized and requested Swift to return to the stage to finish her acceptance speech. According to reports, it seems as though after that incident West was verbally asked to leave the building. What’s more interesting is that before the show, West was seen on the red carpet with girlfriend Amber Rose on his left hand and a bottle of henny on his right. West never ceases to amaze me.
Beyonce’s performances have always had people on their feet as her dances make people want to move along with her. She performed her hit single ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),’ and that’s exactly what her set was, a performance. That same song won Best Video of the Year. This was when she invited Taylor Swift to finish her acceptance speech that wasn’t able to do earlier. It was a professional and touching move on Beyonce’s behalf.
Another interesting part was when Diddy stepped to the stage to present the Best Male Video during his dialogue about Kanye West, hilariously, the crowd booed him after that speech. ‘Best Male Video’ eventually went to T.I. featuring Rihanna for ‘Live Your Life,’ Diddy accepted the award for him.
Jay-Z and Alicia Keys provided a spectacular finale as they both performed ‘Empire State of Mind’ off of Jay’s latest album ‘The Blueprint 3.’ The icon arrived late to the show just to perform his respectable headline spot. Alicia Keys provided an amazing piano performance as she sang her heart out. It was a great tribute to New York City, their beloved hometown. The show officially ended with the world premiere of the final footage of Michael Jackson’s rehearsals and recordings for his upcoming documentary ‘This Is It.’ The trailer was aired all front of Joe and Jermaine Jackson respectively.
On the real, everything from the Michael Jackson tributes to Madonna’s touching monologue to Jay-Z finale was utterly amazing. Kanye made a fool of himself in front of millions by embarrassing Taylor Swift, but Beyonce humbly made up for that. Either way, Kanye wouldn’t be Kanye without his rants and raves; he didn’t even win an award this year either. And MTV needs to stop hiring wack ass Russell Brand to host these awards; I could have done a better job than him.
