New York, NY – It is official; Lil Wayne has sold over 1 million units of his highly anticipated ‘Tha Carter III.’ In an industry where downloads and bootlegs has said to have declined the sales of albums, the heir to the Cash Money throne has proved that there are still true Hip-Hop fans out there. The first two albums ‘Tha Carter’ and ‘Tha Carter II,’ sold 1.1 million and 1.4 million copies, respectively, ‘Tha Carter III’ is his first multiplatinum album and has beat out several artists setting records for first week sales. Definite success, it is the number one album in the country as Nielson Soundscan issued the reports earlier this morning.
Even with his release date being pushed back several times and the pre-mature album leaks, he was still able to sell approximately 420,000 opening day continuing to the end of the first week officially reaching platinum status, every musician’s main focus. Fans and speculators alike predicted this outcome even before the album was to be released. Lil Wayne, himself, believed in the hype and his ability, but humbly never talked about.
This is what Slim, co-founder of Cash Money Records, had to say about Wayne’s success:
“I’ve been saying a million all along, and I’ve been telling people, and they’ve been looking at me crazy. He worked hard. He just came with something different. He let his skills show on a lot of mixtapes. He’s featured on a lot of people’s records. It just made people anticipate his record more than ever.”
During an interview with MTV News earlier this morning (June 18), Wayne humbly thanked all his fans for making his album number one in the country. This was his statement:
“Thank you, that’s it. [I’m] just very grateful, that’s it. Blown away, of course. Surprised, of course. Elated. Every positive word there is. I wasn’t trippin’ about this. I didn’t have no expectations. That’s not only with music, [that’s] period. You shouldn’t expect anything. You never know what could happen.”
At press time, Lil Wayne will begin his ‘Tha Carter III Tour’ on June 27. Keep posted to 24hourhiphop.com for tour dates and cities as we will have them as soon as they are officially released.
